Hue and saturation

In Martins lesson we have been learning about hue and saturation, and that it changes the colour of your original image.

This is the original photo of the man before using hue and saturation, so its the original copy

This is the picture after when i used hue and saturation and it changed the colour of the original image. I also like this colour with the image as it makes it look different and unique.

Stanley Kubrick Archive trip

We had a trip last week Friday and, we were travelling to London college of communication its part of the UAL (university of arts London). We got there by train to elephant&castle and we walked to the university which was like 3 minutes. We went to see Stanley Kubrick's archive, on the exhibition there was a table in the middle of the room full of things to do with Stanley Kubrick. There was also a shelf with so many photos and there was a tun of books and DVD's of his films. On the table i remember there was a mould, a jacket that was used in the shining, paper work, a mask and there was typed writing in German and also location pictures.

The most interesting one i liked the most is the photo of when he made London into New York. I thought that was a smart idea as he didn't want to waste time or he was probably on budget to fly to New York so, he just changed some of the buildings and cars to make it look like New York. That was the Panorama of the whole commercial road and the photos were taken with a camera and he used a ladder too. When you take a panorama he said you have to keep it in the same angle and direction to avoid not accurate panorama. After that he perfects the photos then the cuts and sticks them together to make a long panorama. The Panorama is actually 6 metres long in reality, on the table we only saw half of it. The least interesting thing for me was probably the typed writing with the different languages.I didn't find it that interesting because i saw other things that were better than it.
Stanley Kubrick uses both Primary and Secondary research and also Pre-production.He uses Primary research to take pictures of locations so he can decide where he's gonna film.He also takes pictures of props to help him later of when he views the film. In the film "full metal jacket" he took photos of the locations of Vietnam so he knows how he can make London look like Vietnam. He wanted it to be during war in that country, the props were taken so he knows where to continue from so there's no errors. He used Secondary research for his panorama of London into New York. He used photos from a researcher to cut and stick the photos together in order to create the panorama.

A Kubrick research method i would use in my work would be location scouting. I think this method is very important because its giving you so many options of where to shoot your film and you can get an idea of what you want your film to be about or look like. Looking at locations will also define the genre of your film and its like a guide line to shoot your film. Also when you take photos of the props it will help you avoid errors that could be made on continuity.

Exhibition and Evaluation

From this whole experience i have learned so much from these past 5 weeks. I can say that now i understand fully of how media production works and i have built skills and good knowledge through out. Through my own primary research i was looking for different locations to shoot the film. I had to see the appropriate and suitable place for a horror film to be shot. We also showed our film to the class and we saw there reactions. Through secondary research it was not my script to film, it was Jamie's and we were in his group. Also we got reviews form the class from the feedback sheet and that tells us what we did well and how to improve. It will tell us how scary our horror film actually is by looking at the audience reactions and if they looked scared than we have met the horror genre successfully.
The past research has helped me with this whole project, things like urban legends helped me because i got inspired by one of their stories such as 'hairy monster' and it helped us to get an idea of what we want our group film to be about. Also in Martins lesson we made our own horror poster on Photoshop and that helped us because you can make it in your own creative way of how you want the horror film to look. Also with Sally we took different photos around the college give us an idea of possible locations to shoot a horror film.

The first week was kinda challenging as we had to write our own script, and i have never done that before so i had to really engage myself into doing this by thinking of a story that i could come up with. I had done the script and gave it to David as he was gonna give me feedback. He said he liked the idea of my story but i had some errors in the script which i had to fix. We also had to pitch our script which i was kinda nervous about but at the same time it did make me feel more confident. My script was not chosen which i didn't mind because this was my first time pitching and i knew there would be better scripts out there. After that we were put into groups, and who had the best script was the leader/director of the group. I was in Jamie's group which was just me and Maria. I felt alright with the group because we had one experienced student which was Maria who's done this before.Me and Jamie have never done a film before so we were learning during these weeks.

The second week was very busy as we had to as a group decide who's doing what for Pre-production. I had to create a time plan, Maria was creating the storyboard and she used Celtx and Jamie was organising his script to see if maybe he could change somethings.

The third week it was production week and, that's when David introduced us to the video camera, lights, tripods and the boom pole mic.He even showed us how the boom pole mic works and we hear people speaking through headphones. When we were ready to film we borrowed the equipment from the technicians room and we went straight to Jamie's house to start filming. As we took out the equipment's out we noticed that there was no cable for the boom pole mic and that kinda frustrated me because our film will have no sound and i know that 50% of a film is sound. We couldn't do anything so we filmed anyway hoping that the video camera could get the sounds.Other than that we did film really well and we had fun doing this together.

The fourth week was post production which is when we start editing our film.Since we knew our film had no sound we wanted to do voice over for when the actors are speaking. We did one for Aaingel and Maria but then we decided to take of the voice over as we thought it sounded and looked weird in the film. It looked very unnatural so we left it out. It was kinda like a silence film but it did have music and sound effects. We added that to the film, we used the editing software Adobe Premiere which i had no idea on how to use.Maria would do most of the editing at the beginning as she is more experienced then me and Jamie.I saw how she was using it and looking at what she was doing and i learned so much on how to edit using that software. Its actually easy and i think i could actually make my own film and edit it myself. Overtime me and Jamie would take over the editing as we have learned on how to use it. We added special effects like "glass jar opening and closing", "phone put down" etc. I was the one who researched what horror themed music we should use for our film and i found lots on you tube. We all picked and agreed on one so we used that one only. When we finally showed our film to the class we got feedback from the different groups and some of them said it good and others said it was ok, but i could agree as our film didn't really have a story plot to it in the end part, because it looks like it just skipped into another story. But we tried and this is our first film so it wont be perfect but i have learnt a lot and i know what to do next time to improve.

Overall, i can say that this was a stressful, fun working experience that i will never forget. Me and my group have worked really hard and were constantly worried if our film was bad as it had no sound but then we realised its ok as this is our first time and i'm just happy that we at least had something to show to everyone.

Case Study/2 Features+Associated Marketing

CASE STUDY – Short written piece about audiences. How and why do they like horror? Analyse 2 features and associated marketing

In this report I will be analysing 2 horror features focusing on how and why these features attract an audience. The first feature I have chosen to analyse for this report is horror film ‘Scream’ from 1996, directed by Wes Craven.  Scream revolves around a female protagonist named Sidney Prescott, a teenager coping with the mysterious death of her mother while her friends are being stalked by an unknown killer in town.

The sequence in the film I will be analysing is the ‘chase’ scene towards the end of the film. This scene sees Sidney and Billy having just slept together, Sidney cautiously interrogates her boyfriend leading up to a chase between Sidney and the killer. In Scream, the part i'm talking about is set in the bedroom in Sidney's house. The location of the house is set in Calistoga road, Santa rosa, California, USA. The killer wears a mask throughout the whole film until the end we see his face and that is a prop the main prop in the film. For hair and makeup in this scene Sidney is wearing minimal makeup and her clothes are quite casual. This could relate to the audience because most people wear casual clothing and the audience could feel what she's feeling, such as feeling scared.

In this sequence we see a wide shot of the two characters in the bedroom. Sidney has been positioned closest to the camera whereas Billy can be seen in the background out of focus. This gives the suggestion that Sidney is the main focus, Billy asks her “are you okay?” which only emphasises her dominance in the scene. The camera then cuts to a close up shot of Sidney placing the comb down on her side table, beside it the audience can instantly see a red telephone which completely stands out from the other neutral objects surrounding it. This may have been purposely done as a red phone can be suggestive of danger or calling for help.  It may also give the audience an idea of what’s to come. The camera then cuts to a medium close up of Sidney with the background music slowly fading in as Sidney asks Billy a series of questions. In cuts between medium close up shots of Sidney and low angle POV of Billy. Billy at this point is becoming more agitated with her questioning; this is accompanied with violins heard in the background. As the conversation between the two characters becomes more intense the music changes, the violin becomes harsher and piano is now heard throughout.  The camera goes from a medium close up to a close up shot of Billy saying “what do I have to do, to prove to you that I am not a killer”. This shows that he looks guilty and the audience could not be convinced by his innocence. After he says that, the camera cuts to Sidney’s face and you can see her scared reaction when the killer comes in. The camera cuts back to Billy and now the audience can see the villain behind him. As this is happening the music builds up then Billy turns around then the killer kills him. The music at this point gets louder and jumpy like a pounding noise. The camera cuts to Sidney’s face to see her expression and then back to the killer. This can be effective to the audience as they will feel the way Sidney is feeling.

Scream marketing
Scream have Halloween costumes that people could wear. The mask in the film is the most famous prop. People will instantly know it’s from the movie scream.

Scream the chase scene-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMv6sYvRtFk

The Second feature film I have chosen to analyse is Saw from 2004, directed by James wan. Saw revolves around two strangers that have woken up in a room asking themselves on how they got there and why. They soon discover they are pawns in a deadly game perpetrated by a notorious serial killer.
In this sequence we see a shiny necklace floating about in the water. It then cuts to the strangers face as an extreme close up, he gets out of the water and you see the necklace again and it goes down the pipe. This tells the audience that the necklace means something, its valuable in the movie and the director wants you to remember it because it could be important. The stranger falls to the floor and the music gets louder in a scarier tone. This can make the audience feel tension because they are feeling like the stranger and the music really gets your attention because it makes you feel like you’re in the movie. The camera is always on the stranger and it’s in medium shot, they want us to see where he is from the background and that it is dark. He then hears a voice talking to him while he can’t see anything as he says “who’s that, turn on the lights!”. This makes a mystery has to where he is, why and how he got there. The camera cuts into a high angle shot filming the lights turning on drastically. The camera moves into each light that is switched on while it does that it cuts back to the stranger who is blinded by the light. He tries to open his eyes and we can see what he sees which is blurry. This shows the audience how he is feeling and they can reflect on him. The camera then cuts to another stranger who is on the other side of the room. The camera zooms out of him and you can see the expression on his face. This implies that the stranger there before was not alone and that there is somebody else going through the same thing. The first stranger walks towards the other one, he is walking towards the camera and this makes it look like he is walking towards the audience. The camera then moves down to a dead monster on the floor with blood. They did it this way because they knew you weren’t expecting it they want you to be scared. Also the music had a loud bang and a screaming voice which could make the viewer jumpy. A close up shot of the monster on the floor, they want you to see what he looks like in detail, also a close up shot of the recorder and gun in his hand. This tells the audience that the dead person on the floor has probably been in the same situation as the two strangers have.

Saw marketing

Saw has their theme park attractions such as Thorpe Park. That is the most famous and scariest ride in the park. They also have it in Alton towers a different version of it. This is way of advertising a movie since lots of people go to theme parks.
Saw clip-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNSN6QhIWeA

Overall in comparison, they are both pretty similar films because they both have that similar music. When something is building up in a scene that upbeat loud music will come up to get the audience attention and to warn them that there something scary about to pop up. They are both killing horror films which was typical in those days, there were many of close ups of particular objects. Such as the phone in scream there was a cut scene just of the phone. That was telling you that this part is important. In saw it was the necklace that had a close up shot because it wanted to show you and tell the audience something. They both involved blood, they are bloody horror films. In terms of lighting i think saw had better lighting because you can see clearly of the characters when the light is turned on. In scream the lighting looked dimmer as maybe to give it a more scary look. In my opinion i personally like scream film as it has more action and horror at the same time which is interesting.

Stanley Kubrick's Boxes

Image result for stanley kubrick boxes
Stanley Kubrick was born in Manhattan, new York city in 1928 and he died in 1999 in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, England, UK at the age of 70. He was a director, writer and producer. He is famous for being one of the greatest media researches and his films like:the shining, a clockwork orange or eyes shut.
After Kubrick's death, a journalist called John Ronson made a documentary named Stanley Kubrick's boxes. It was about Stanley and his life on work. This documentary was showing us all about these boxes that he had that was full of research and and his career. It was realised in 2008.Kubrick had lots of research on his films, like about 1000 and he kept it all in his house.

Image result for stanley kubrick's boxes
John Ronson thought that he should let the whole world know about Stanley Kubrick's life when he was working on his films. He was having doubts about it because he thought people would change the story to make him look bad. The first box the journalist opened was a box on which was written in Islington because that is the area he lived in. The box had things likes pictures with lots of detail. They fund out that he had a location scouter called Manuel Harlan. The film eyes wide shut, Harlan took at the end more than 30000 photos of all locations.John Ronson the journalist has spent 5 years coming to Kubrick's house and doing documentary on his boxes.
The end of the documentary we see that Stanley wife decides to give all the boxes with the research and knowledge to the London college of communication from the university of art london because she would rather give them for someone else to use it and gain the knowledge than throwing it away as waste. The boxes were moved in the college in 2007 and gained access to the students in 2008.

Primary and Secondary research

In Amy's lesson we were talking about primary and secondary research and how it effects us everyday. Primary research is collecting data for the first time, by a method other than secondary research. Primary data comes from the researcher for the purpose of the specific purpose it hand. Secondary research is when information has been gathered from other sources and not by you personally. Its usually something like, somebody wrote some time of data and then its handed to someones else to read, that is secondary research.

Storyboard

Maria made the story board and she used the tool from the website celtx. She was helped by using Jamie's script in order to complete the story. I think she did a pretty good job at it and she thought well of where the characters will be.

This is the first scene of our movie. In this part of the storyboard the woman is in bed and she suddenly woke up because she heard a noise coming from downstairs and she was worried and confused into what the noise was.
Inline image 1

In this part of the storyboard the woman gets out of bed because shes curious to know what that noise was.
Inline image 2

In this part of the storyboard shes heading for the door to go downstairs and when she arrives at the stairs something strange happens.
Inline image 3

In this part of the storyboard shes on the stairs and shes hearing noises like screaming, and the more steps down she takes the more louder and closer she gets to the noise.
Inline image 5

In this part of the storyboard shes still on the stairs and when shes halfway down shes knows its clear that its a demonic scream and that there is something down there. Pictures on the wall are shaking when shes going down the stairs.
Inline image 6

In this part of the storyboard she arrives downstairs and she realised that the noise is coming from the closet, she goes close to it to check it out.
Inline image 9

In this part of the storyboard shes opening the closet door, trembling and shaking nervously.
Inline image 10

In this part of the storyboard she opened the door to see her friend stood still, terrified. She asked her friend into why she's in the closet. Her friend replies with "she told me to" and then her friend points behind her and she looked but there was no one there. When the girl turned back around her friend was gone.
Inline image 11

In this part of the storyboard shes scared and wondering where her friend went. She called her but there was no reply. She decided to look inside the closet to look for her friend.
Inline image 12

This is the final part of the storyboard and shes in the closet and she switches on the light and she is faced with a demonic looking women with a eerie grin on her face. She immediately screams at the sight and then it went complete darkness.

Post Production

Editing the film
When we finally finished filming, we then starting to edit our footage in the mac room. We first had to get a hard drive so things can get backed up. We then opened up Adobe Premiere editing software and we used that to edit our film. Jamie and Maria edit the first half of the footage until the middle. They inserted sound effects e.g bottle opening, closing jar. They also added colour effect through out the whole film to make it black and white. I on the other was searching for music like, horror creepy music to fit in our film. I then found one and i asked Jamie and Maria for their opinion and they seemed to like it. So Maria inserted that piece into the film. Me and Maria then carried on editing from the middle of the film until the end. We added more sound effects and then we added colour for just the last scene when the monster appears. We added a different music piece to the end, a more jumpy scary song, to really scare the audience. I also learned how to properly edit using a software iv'e never used, and by watching other people use it like maria i learned a lot on how to edit footage's using adobe.

Colour correction
We did colour correct the footage at the end because, the original footage was to dark, the lighting wasn't so good. You couldn't really see maria who was acting in the scene so what we did was we put the brightness up and sharpen it . We also changed the hue and saturation and colour contrast, at the end it did make a huge difference because now you can actually see her pointing. Also it has a green effect to it too.

Special effects
The special effect we added was just the green colour at the end of the film

Titiles
Me and Maria added titles at the beginning of the film saying the name of it which is "a noise in the night" in a different white font. Its right at the beginning of the open scene when Aaingel is in the kitchen. Then there's the title at the end of the film which are the credits saying the directors name and editors name. Also who starred in the movie, below is what the credits look like.

Voice over
The voice over seemed like a great idea at first since we didn't have any audio in our film, because of the boom pole mic situation. We decided to leave it out because we thought the film will look better without it. We did record Aaingel and maria's voice and we put it in the film, then we realised we don't actually like it there.Their voices as to loud and out of place and tune so we just left out.We feel like the music kinda took its place.

Music
The music was found on YouTube by me.I found tons of horror music themes and came across two that would fit the film.I wanted two of them because, one for the beginning and another for the end which is something completely different and makes the audience in a different scene.

File Formats

PDF-Portable Document file-Unique for being easy to access from anywhere anytime. This doesn't need any any software to be bought. This can be accessed from downloading free software from the internet.

PNG-PNG's are usually pictures that support transparency which means that they have a transparent background and they are easy to edit

PSD-Photoshop Document-This document is unique for saving your different layers so you could edit it later anytime whereas if you would save your work as a jpeg, all your layers will be lost and bind into each other. The PSD is also unique as it can open all the above important documents (GIF,PDF,PNG,JPG) A disadvantage is that this file can be only opened by those who already have Photoshop installed.

GIF-The GIF is a moving image or a short piece of video that is of short size(compressed) and it can be opened without any software so it is accessible to anyone.

JPG-JPGs are famous for their compressed size and accessibility.

In class we focused more on the GIF file. Martin taught us how to create a GIF file from a normal picture.

Homework-Sergei Eisenstein

Image result for sergei m eisensteinThis is Sergei Eisenstein, he was born on 10th January 1898 and died 11 February 1948. He was a soviet film director and film theorist. He is famous for his particular silent films such as, strike(1925), Battleship Potemkin(1925) and October(1928).  He started his career in Moscow in a theatre there.

Eisenstein has won awards for his film work. He has won, Two Stalin prizes, Honoured artist of the RSFSR, order of Lenin, order of the badge of honour. He was probably one of the first director to have editing in their films.

Group script

This is the script that me and my group are going to act out. We will be reading it and discussing what were gonna do like how to film it and who is acting as the characters and, who is filming it.

Budget
Jamie only bought a mask for the film

Casting
The cast is me, Jamie, Maria, Aaingel and Cale

Props
The only props we used was the mask and the knife

Equipment
The equipment we had was a Panasonic camera 3 LED lights and a boom pole mic with headphones

Production day- Shooting short horror film

This day on 4/10/16 we shot our short horror film in Jamie's house, It was me, Maria, Jamie,Aaingel and Cale. It was a good fun learning experience. What we did was we borrowed a Panasonic camera and it came with its bag. A boom pole mic and 3 lights in its suit case. We borrowed this all for one night, from the technician room. TJ gave us all these equipment's and we had to sign off before we left the college. We then left the college with the stuff to prepare to film in Jamie's house. When we got their we saw Jamie's cute dog and we were playing and stroking it ,but then after that we got straight into filming. We first went into Jamie's room to discuss where were gonna film like the locations so, we decided to film in the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. We then took out all the equipment from the bags like we took out the camera and the tripod. I was trying to put the camera on the tripod but was kind of failing to so Aaingel did it. I then took out all the lights so we would use them later in the night scene and then Jamie took out the boom pole and also the headphones that came with it. As Jamie was preparing the boom pole him and Aaingel noticed that something was missing for it. Apparently the cable from the boom pole that is supposed to connect to the camera was not there, and that's a problem because then there would be no sound in our film. At first we thought maybe it fell ut of the bag but nothing did, we realised that TJ must of forgotten to the cable in. So we were quite worried and some of us were thinking to go all the way back to school to get one but that would make it to late. So we decided to just film anyway without the boom pole and we thought hopefully the camcorder would get the sound and our voices. Also we thought we could do voice over and get sound effects when we edit it.

These are the pictures of when we were shooting the film:

Camera
The filming camera that we used was a Panasonic for all our shots.

Lighting
We borrowed three lights and we when were filming we only used one. We used the lighting when we were shooting the night scene.

Sound recording
We shot our film and then we realized that their is no sound because we didn't have the complete accessories to the boom pole mic so we had to film without a mic. We hoped that the recorder would catch our voices but unfortunately it didn't so we had to work something out afterwards.

Cast
The cast is Me, Jamie, Maria, Aaingel, Cale. I was part filming and Jamie did the other half. Maria, Aaingel and Cale were acting.

Hair and make up
Aaingel had to wet her hair for the shower scene and be in a towel.  Maria and Aaingel  had to be in their Pyjamas. Cale had to wear the scary mask.

Here is the actual footage of the film 'a noise in the night'

Experiments with Photoshop

This is what we did in martins lesson, I have used the background of Portugal's landscapes and inserted it on each letter so it has the background on each letter. I find it really cool and fun to experiment with these.

I also did one for USA and the outline of it is dark so it looks like it has a shadow, and the letters are pushed out forwards to give that 3D look.

Editing brain storm

This is some of the things that i know about editing and how they are useful when making a film. I know that these are important techniques used in films. During our brain storm we watched a documentary about editing, and film directors were talking about it. They were explaining why and how they use editing in their films.

Location research (photography research)

This is the sheet that me and my partner took around to follow the list of different locations around the college. As you can see it is not completed yet but will be soon. It also says why is the location we took good for a horror film or photo shoot, so you had to explain that too.

The research we were doing is primary because we are the ones taking the pictures from our camera's. A location scout is where you take pictures of different locations that would relate to your film, and where you think you would film in your movie or even for a photo shoot. Location scout is very important as it is the process in the Pre-production stage of anything because you got to know where possible places you could film or capture.

I think this picture could maybe suit a horror film as there's no one in the picture and it looks like the college is quiet which could create tension.
I think that maybe if the lights were dimmer or off at the end of the corridor it could be a more scary scene in a horror film.

This photo could suit a horror photo shoot because its near the bins and boiler room which is very unusual and different. If it was night time it would look more like a scary scene.

This is the same photo from above, and again this could be a horror photo shoot as it is the boiler room which no one expects that place to be scary.

This picture would suit a horror film because it looks kinda dark and it and the CCTV being there makes it look more scary i think. I think with the camera there it creates a sense of mystery in the place.

This would defiantly suit a horror film because its in the middle of the trees which is like the woods. The woods is usually used in most horror films so this would be a perfect place to shoot one.

I don't think this would suit a horror theme because there's a brightly coloured wall and horror doesn't suit with that. Horror is more dark and gloomy colours, this looks more like a happy and safe environment.

This would suit both a horror film and photo shoot. This is like a alleyway which can be scary in films and create tension. An alleyway is good thing in a horror film because alleyways are usually dark and quiet and something happens in them in films.

This photo would suit for a horror photo shoot, if you had the villain on the stairs with a scary face and if you had the victim right in front of the camera that would be a good horror poster. Also if the background was darker and had a gloomy effect it would suit the horror genre more.

Horror Poster

This is my horror film poster that i have completed today. I have used Photoshop to create this. Me and my group are then going to put our posters together to make a whole big one for our group. We then are going to use that poster for our horror film.

Primary and Secondary sources
